George Bory, Chief Investment Strategist, Fixed Income, Allspring Global Investments
As fiscal spending, political dynamics, and economic conditions converge, yield curves are settling into a new normal – with short term rates expected to come down creating more opportunities to target investments along the curve. In this environment, we anticipate corporate default rates below long-term averages in publicly traded markets. For insurers seeking to optimize their investment strategies, multi-sector and crossover bond portfolios offer compelling opportunities. These approaches can generate yields that outpace inflation while also building long-term capital. However, navigating this landscape requires precision. Insurers must contend with regulatory changes, market volatility, and the need for precise risk management to ensure portfolio stability. Public markets remain foundational, offering transparency, liquidity, and flexibility in a higher-rate environment. As the new normal settles in and the low-rate era fades, the value of public fixed income is redefined, presenting insurers with renewed opportunities for strategic portfolio construction.
